Process Server Hawaii County
Process Serving on the Big Island of Hawaii
Hawaii County, commonly known as the Big Island, is the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, spanning over 4,028 square miles of diverse terrain from the snow-capped summit of Mauna Kea to the active lava flows of Kilauea. This vast geographic area creates unique challenges for process serving that do not exist anywhere else in the state. The Big Island is roughly the size of Connecticut, and distances between communities can be significant. Driving from Hilo on the east side to Kona on the west side takes approximately two and a half hours along the saddle road, and the coastal route is even longer. Our network of process servers positioned across the Big Island ensures coverage of every community without the excessive travel time that a single-server model would require.
The Third Circuit Court of Hawaii operates two courthouses on the Big Island: the Hilo courthouse at 777 Kilauea Avenue and the Kona courthouse at 75-1000 Hualalai Road in Kailua-Kona. This dual-courthouse system reflects the geographic reality of the island and the need to provide accessible justice to communities on both sides. Our process servers regularly file proof of service documents at both courthouses and are familiar with the specific procedures and requirements at each location.
East Hawaii - Hilo and Surrounding Communities
Hilo is the county seat of Hawaii County and the largest city on the east side of the Big Island. With a population of approximately 45,000 in the greater Hilo area, it is the center of government and commerce for East Hawaii. Hilo's rainy climate, receiving an average of 126 inches of rainfall per year, means that our process servers must be prepared for wet conditions on virtually every service attempt. The town's older neighborhoods, including areas around Waianuenue Avenue and Kilauea Avenue, feature a mix of residential and commercial properties where service is regularly conducted.
The University of Hawaii at Hilo campus, located on Kawili Street, is another common service location, particularly for cases involving students or university employees. Our process servers understand the campus layout and the procedures for accessing dormitories and offices on the campus. We also regularly serve documents at Hilo Medical Center, the County of Hawaii offices on Aupuni Street, and the various state government offices located throughout downtown Hilo.
Puna District
The Puna District, southeast of Hilo, is one of the fastest-growing and most diverse areas on the Big Island. Communities like Pahoa, Keaau, Mountain View, and Hawaiian Paradise Park have experienced rapid population growth in recent decades, driven in part by relatively affordable land prices. This growth has created a sprawling network of subdivisions, some with paved roads and clear addressing, and others with unpaved roads, absent street signs, and addresses that can be extremely difficult to locate. Hawaiian Acres, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Orchid Land Estates, and Leilani Estates each have their own unique road systems that require local knowledge to navigate efficiently.
The 2018 Kilauea eruption permanently altered parts of the Puna landscape, destroying over 700 homes in Leilani Estates and Vacationland and creating new lava fields that severed some roads entirely. Some former residents relocated to other parts of the Big Island or left the island altogether, while others returned to rebuild. Our process servers maintain current knowledge of which areas are accessible and where former Puna residents have relocated, ensuring that service can be accomplished even when addresses have been affected by volcanic activity.
West Hawaii - Kailua-Kona and the Kohala Coast
Kailua-Kona is the commercial center of West Hawaii and the primary resort destination on the Big Island. The town stretches along Alii Drive and Kuakini Highway, encompassing a mix of tourist-oriented businesses, residential neighborhoods, and professional offices. Our Kona-based process servers cover the entire corridor from the Keahole Airport area south through Kailua-Kona, Keauhou, and Captain Cook to the coffee-growing communities of South Kona.
The Kohala Coast, north of Kona, is home to some of Hawaii's most exclusive resort properties, including the Mauna Lani, Mauna Kea, and Waikoloa resorts. Serving individuals at these resorts often requires navigating security gates and coordinating with resort management. Our process servers have experience working with the security teams at these properties and can advise attorneys on the most effective approach for service at resort locations. The Waikoloa Village community, located inland from the coast, is a large residential development that generates significant process serving demand.
North Hawaii - Waimea and North Kohala
Waimea, also known as Kamuela, sits at an elevation of 2,670 feet on the slopes between Mauna Kea and the Kohala Mountains. This ranching community is home to the historic Parker Ranch, one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States. Waimea has a cooler, more temperate climate than the coastal areas, and its community has a distinct character rooted in its paniolo (cowboy) heritage. Our process servers working the Waimea area understand this community's character and approach service with the professionalism and respect that the situation requires.
The North Kohala communities of Hawi and Kapaau, at the northern tip of the island, are remote by Big Island standards but still within our service area. These small towns have strong community identities and limited commercial activity. Service in North Kohala often involves driving significant distances from Waimea or Kona, and our pricing reflects the additional travel time required to serve documents in these outlying areas.
South Hawaii - Kau District and Hawaiian Ocean View
The Kau District, encompassing communities from Volcano Village south through Pahala, Naalehu, and Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, is the most remote and sparsely populated area of the Big Island. Hawaiian Ocean View Estates is one of the largest subdivisions in the United States by land area, yet it has a relatively small permanent population spread across a vast network of roads, many of which are unpaved. Locating addresses in Ocean View can be extremely challenging without local knowledge, as many properties lack visible house numbers and some roads are accessible only by four-wheel-drive vehicles.
Despite the challenges, our process servers provide reliable coverage throughout the Kau District. We understand the road conditions, the weather patterns, and the community dynamics that affect service in this area. Naalehu, the southernmost town in the United States, and Pahala, a former sugar plantation town, each have their own character and addressing conventions that our servers know well. For the most remote addresses in the Kau District, we recommend allowing additional time for service attempts, as access may be weather-dependent during certain seasons.
